Becoming Mature

Tuesday Night Church’s “Next steps series” finished last Tuesday!

I was always looking forward to hearing them every week as Luke shared the important steps after becoming a Christian.

I especially enjoyed last week’s message, “becoming mature” so I’ll share it on this blog!

until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (Ephesians 4:13-16)

One of the next steps after becoming a Christian is “Becoming mature.”

Receiving Jesus is just the beginning.

We need to keep on growing throughout our life time.

What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2 The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3 So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces[a] of the world. 4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.[b] 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,[c] Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. (Galatians 4:1-7)

When we become a Christian, we are a baby, but we want to grow up. And God also wants us to become mature sons and daughters.

The key to grow as a mature person is written in the following scripture

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. (romans 8:14)

Learn to be led by God, not your emotions and selfish desires.

If we want to grow up, we can’t be led by our feelings.

Being mature means not being swayed by emotions.

When you don’t get your own way can you still be secure?

Girls, don’t use your tears to manipulate.

Guys, don’t become a “cave man” (isolating yourself in a room) when things don’t go your way!

Don’t take advantage of each other.

Also, as church is family, we treat each other in a good way!

Come to church to contribute.

If you are someone who is so hard to please, people will start avoiding you more and more.

Check if the following applies to you to see if you are a “baby” or not.

1) Are you annoyed easily?

2) Are you easily offended? Are you touchy?

3) Do you blame others easily?

4) Do you cry/get upset when you don’t get invited to things?

5) Do you want to quit when you get challenged?

6) Are you always asking how you feel and telling others how you feel?

We have good news for you! Even if the points above apply to you, you can become mature too!

Luke shared some points to become mature.

1) Recognise and accept God as your father and get absolute security in Him.

The more you get to know God and the more you get filled with the Father’s love, the more you want to please people and you will become secure.

2) Learn from examples (Jesus and leaders in church)

3) Live and be motivated by love and passion instead of fear.

Don’t make decisions based on fear.

Continuing bad relationship because you are scared to not have a boyfriend in the future.

Choosing a job that doesn’t have Sundays off because you are scared of not having a job. etc…

4) Learn how to grow by facing challenges instead of running away

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. (Hebrews 12:7-8)

What decisions you make when you are challenged determines your future.

Some people waste years and years by running away from challenges and making bad decisions.

Good decision has power.

Sometimes leaders will challenge you. But that’s because they want you to grow! They want you to have a good marriage. They want you to be successful at work.

Lean into challenge because that’s the fastest way to grow.

Even those successful people today have gone through challenges. They are where there are today because they’ve made lots of good decisions in tough times.
